Live Your Own 5-Star Vacation Story in Puerto Rico!

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Puerto Rico, The All-Star Island for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

mentioned a little while back that Ken and I had recently booked ourselves a trip to Punta Cana, but what I may not have mentioned was that Puerto Rico was on our short list of possible destinations! Our dream of visiting Purerto Rico began in 2011, when we were trying to plan our summer vacation that would double as our "hurrah, we finished grad school!" celebration. One of the main reasons that we even had Puerto Rico on our list, besides the amazing beaches and resorts, was that we wouldn't need passports or foreign currency! One less thing to worry about, right? We began to plan our dream vacation, and here's what we put on our "must-do" list!

Visit El Yunque

Ever wanted to hike in a rainforest? Well, did you know that Puerto Rico is the only rainforest in the US National Park Service? El Yunque spans 28,000 acres, prime for hiking, bird watching, and taking a dip at La Mina waterfall! If climbing is more your thing, hike El Toro Peak, which takes you to the highest point in the forest at 3,532 feet!

Kayak in a Bioluminescent Bay

When I was in high school, I was introduced to bioluminescent bacteria. Never heard of it? Well, bioluminescent organisms make their own light! In Puerto Rico, the source of the light in some of the bays come from dinoflagellates, most of which are microscopic plankton. The light show happens when the water is agitated, so just brushing your hand through the water can make it light up. There are three bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, and as a consummate biology nerd, I knew that I couldn't miss it!

Lounge on the Beach

After a few days of excitement, we definitely would need some R&R on the beach. Puerto Rico was 270 miles of white sand coastline where you can soak up the sun (or if you're me, slather on the sunscreen and relax under an umbrella!) Wherever you are on the island, there's bound to be a beach where you can take in the scenary, swim in the gorgeous, turquoise water, or take a nap while listening to the waves.

Experience the Culture Through Food

Before we got rid of cable, Ken and I were Food Network addicts. We love trying new recipes, going out to eat, and finding those littles places when we travel that make you want to come back over and over again. Puerto Rico has drawn many internationally renowned chefs to the island, and combines the tastes of African and Spanish cuisine to excite your tastebuds. If it's coffee you're after, then you're in luck because Puerto Rico's volcanic soil and moutainous climate provide some of the best conditions in which to grow coffee. And of course, you can't forget a trip to a rum distillery! (There's also a cheese making tour! We'd definitely be checking that one out!)

There are so many more options for you to fill your vacation with, from luxury hotels and salsa clubs to caving, golf, or shopping! Live your own 5-star vacation story in Puerto Rico.

Ken and I never did make it to PR that summer in 2011, but you can bet that with options like these, we'll definitely be heading there as soon as we can. If you were planning a trip, what would you do in PR? If you book, will you take me with you!?
